It appears that Tom Glavine will not be returning to the Mets in 2007 and prefers to finish out his career with the Atlanta Braves — primarily for family reasons. He is expected to announce it this afternoon.
This will leave the Mets with no veteran starters heading into next season — and will deprive them of arguably their best starter from 2006. While happy with the Mets and the organization, the stresses of keeping his family in the Atlanta area have been an issue — and Glavine feels strongly the need to do what is best for his family.
The Mets, who will be without Pedro Martinez for at least the first half of 2007, were already expected to focus on adding front of the rotation pitching this offseason, but now that need is sharply increased.—MM
