Don’t be shocked if the Mets manage to get their way back into the International League in 2008. Sources say that Syracuse is already hot for the Mets — and wouldn’t have renewed their affiliation this year with Toronto had it been known the Mets and Norfolk were headed for a messy divorce.
At this point, the Mets are prepared to grin and bear it, and put a happy face on New Orleans — while they try to find a new South Atlantic League affiliate, down now to Savannah or West Virginia, the latter, being the team’s first choice.
It remains to be seen whether the Mets front office — and based on Jeff Wilpon’s kind of insulting comments to the people of Norfolk, which made it seem like he didn’t even know where the team played, it doesn’t seem likely — will find the people skills to work effectively with their minor league affiliates.—MM
